Nights and Weekends: how the seasons worked
The structure of Buildspace gave participants a public deadline and several ways to learn from one another.
Buildspace's Nights and Weekends program organized individual projects into six-week seasons. I participated in Seasons 4 and 5 while working full time and conducting dissertation fieldwork. The program offered a shared structure for people whose projects, experience, and available time differed considerably.
Participants selected a project, built an initial version, shared progress, and worked toward a public launch or demonstration. Online activity took place through Discord and X, with in-person events for members who could travel. The research timeline records Season 4 in August–September 2023 and Season 5 in June–July 2024.
The schedule was part of the environment
A public deadline gave members something to organize around. It also made progress visible to other people: someone could see an attempt, ask a question, offer help, or return the following week to see what had changed.
The interviews showed that members used this structure differently. Andrés described the online weeks as time for coding and the in-person events as time for conversation. Emanuel valued the structured weeks while also questioning his reliance on them to sustain his work. Esther compared the seasonal format with the more intensive campus program she had attended. These are paraphrases of the interview accounts presented in the research.
Their differences were useful. A schedule that helps one participant concentrate may help another meet people, and a structure that supports a project can also become something a member wants to outgrow.
What the study could examine
The Digital Sidewalk framework directed attention to those pathways: where a participant went for help, who became a recurring contact, and how the community responded to unfinished work. Enrollment figures could describe the program's scale, but they could not explain those experiences.
The seasons provided the repeated activity needed to observe them. The Fort Mason events added a physical setting in which some of the same relationships became visible.
